Building each student’s strong Catholic faith is a central purpose of our school. We accomplish this through service learning, faith formation and celebration of the sacraments.
Service-learning
Service-learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. As the name implies, it involves two equally important components: service and learning.
Service-learning takes many forms, and service-learning projects are as varied as the teachers and students who engage in them and the schools and communities that foster them. Regular opportunities for service learning at OLP include our work with Partners and Conservation, the St. Vincent de Paul group and making sandwiches twice a month, and our 7th graders serving lunch at the Holy Family soup kitchen.
Faith Formation
With Christ at the center of our mission, all students participate in daily lessons in our Catholic faith. Teachers follow the Diocesan developed religious education curriculum to provide grade level prescribed resources, content and understanding of the teachings of the Church. We participate in Mass as a whole school, once per month and on Holy Days, as well as celebrating in grade level bands one additional day each month. All school prayer services are a frequent part of our annual calendar. Students also have the opportunity to participate in adoration on a monthly basis as well as receive the Sacrament of Penance during Advent and Lent. Prayer is at the heart of our daily structure in all classrooms. Our Parish Pastor, Monsignor Johnson, is also a frequent visitor to the classrooms each week further extending the mission and purpose of our school.
Sacraments
We celebrate the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion in 2nd grade and Confirmation in the 8th grade. Students who have not yet been baptized or parents who are interested in joining the Catholic faith should contact the OLP Parish Office online at www.olp-parish.org or by phone at 614-263-8824 to arrange a meeting with a member of the Parish Staff.
